Fourth annual ride tops 300

Smiling faces were everywhere. Old and young alike enjoyed a great day of riding around the Olympic Peninsula discovering the hospitality and beauty of its iconic lavender farms. The ride’s fourth year saw a healthy increase with 320 registrants, a 23% increase from the previous year. More than $5,000 was raised to benefit the Olympic Discovery Trail.

The riders’ feedback was very positive with comments praising the volunteers for their cheerful support and the lavender farms for their wonderful hospitality. The lavender farms were considered SAG stops this year and carried refreshments and snacks for the riders. Both rides, the Metric Century and the Farm Tour, remained within the Sequim-Dungeness Valley and avoided highway traffic as much as possible. Commendations on the route’s markings were received. The cyclists love the slower pace of the Sequim Valley and the scenic Olympic Discovery Trail. The riders also appreciate the traditional cycling swag that included T-shirts, caps, cycling accessories and lavender gifts.

The Tour de Lavender is an excellent way to discover the beauty of “America’s Provence”, where the mountains roll down to the sea and lavender grows so well. There is also little doubt that the ride whets the cyclists’ appetite to come back with their friends and families to this bike-friendly community that has established a reputation for its beautiful lavender farms and scenic byways. All net proceeds from registration fees are divided between a large donation to the Peninsula Trails Coalition for the maintenance and development of the Olympic Discovery Trail and prefunding the following year’s event.

A huge “thank-you” is extended to this year’s riders, volunteers and sponsors who made this unique ride to the Sequim lavender farms possible. We look forward to an even better ride next year on August 5, 2017 and another exciting Pedal Power Weekend!
